PerformanceTest by PassMark lets you benchmark and compare your system

“I need a new computer!” is a cry often heard by parents and system administrators alike. But often, the problem isn’t in the hardware – if the user isn’t an avid gamer or using a really ancient system, more often than not the problem is a crudded-up Windows installation (yes, I know, “this doesn’t happen on Linux”).

Proving to your user/kid that the hardware isn’t the problem is often easier said than done. What they see is just a slow computer, but PassMark’s PerformanceTest may be able to help you prove that the hardware isn’t all that wimpy.

First of all, you should know this is a Shareware product. You get it for a 30-day free eval period, after which you should buy it. But for most home users, 30 days should be plenty – you just want to see if you should buy a new computer, and if so, how much would that computer really be better than what you have now.

PerformanceTest runs a fairly comprehensive battery of tests, including CPU, graphics (2D and 3D), memory, hard-drive and CD performance. It then lets you upload the results onto its online database, and you can also pull information from the database to compare your system to right within the program.

For some reason, I was unable to find other systems listed as running Windows 7 x64, and so I had to compare my system with rigs running Vista x64.

Even if you don’t want to benchmark your own system, the database provides some very illuminating statistics. If you’re on the market for a new system, you should definitely take a stroll through some of the charts.

Norton’s best idea ever: Hack is Wack! contest, featuring Snoop Dogg

กันยายน 3rd, 2010
You know, if there’s one genre of music I think of when I’m pondering issues related to cyber-security, it’s rap. And if there’s one rapper I think of when I’m in the mood for lyrics which don’t mention any kind of illegal activities, it’s Snoop Dogg.

Yes, those are two of the most ridiculous sentences I’ve ever written at Download Squad, but whatcha gonna do? This isn’t a situation I ever expected to encounter. Behold, the Hack is Wack! contest to raise cyber-crime awareness!

The contest, of course, is based on the old geek hit “Don’t Copy That Floppy,” the early 90′s hit sponsored by the fine folks at the Software Publisher’s Association. Hack is Wack! is different, of course. Hey, it’s 2010 now, and contests like this are crowdsourced — so take off your shirt, pull your pants down below your waistline, and get ready to drop some plates.

First prize is a Toshiba laptop and tickets to a Snoop show — where you get to meet (wait for it) his management team and agent. Yeah. Fo’shizzle. Now on to their choice for spokesperson…

I love you, Snoop, but as much as I enjoy listening to you refer to yourself as the d-o-double-g, you seem like an odd fit for this project. Your rap sheet, after all, makes it appear like this could be some kind of nutty judge’s idea of community service.

At any rate, someone please inform Paul Barman of this contest and make sure he enters immediately.

Facebook Connect pulled from Apple’s iTunes Ping

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Facebook Connect is missing from Apple’s new social network, iTunes Ping, after it was apparently working on Wednesday night. There seem to be mixed messages coming from Apple, according to interviews that All Things D’s Kara Swisher conducted with Apple honcho Steve Jobs and VP Phil Schiller.

Jobs said Facebook Connect wasn’t in Ping, and gave a dismissive “I guess we could do that.” Meanwhile, Schiller said you can absolutely find your friends on Ping using Facebook Connect. Both are wrong, though: Apple apparently DID do that, and now the feature is gone.

However, there are clues that Facebook Connect was meant to be in iTunes. If you’re following no one, you’ll see a message on your People page that says, “You are not following anyone. Connect with Facebook, search for people, invite friends, or follow recommended people to get started.” Facebook Connect is even mentioned in the Welcome to Ping email you get when you first sign up.

At this point, it’s a mystery whether Facebook Connect will be back, but I hope it will. Although Jobs says Facebook demanded “onerous terms” from Apple, using Facebook Connect is way faster than manually adding all your friends to Ping. Hey Steve, can we get a Twitter or Gmail connect, at least?

International Kindle users: change your country to avoid additional fees

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Filed under:

amazon

Okay, so my earlier story about how Amazon is messing with International Kindle users made a bit of a splash. Quite a few things came up in my investigations before and after the story, but the basic fact remains: Amazon will add a fixed $2.00 surcharge to most items (which may or may not be a “roaming charge”) if you’re an international customer, even if you’re using a WiFi-only device.

But I’ve now discovered something interesting enough to warrant a follow-up: It turns out that if you go to Amazon’s Manage My Kindle page, you can simply set your country.

I think you must specify a valid address in your destination country (I supplied a valid one in Canada), but Amazon then simply takes your word for it.

As soon as I switched my country from Israel to Canada, the extra $2.00 per book simply disappeared. I could also suddenly subscribe to the NYT. I didn’t actually try to do it, but it appears to be possible. Another side-effect was that Michael Pollan’s Food Rules was suddenly unavailable, whereas before I was actually to buy the title for $7.20 (when my location was listed as “Israel”).

What’s interesting is that in talking to four different Amazon reps, not a single one has mentioned this option. Also, Amazon can easily verify your actual location in two different ways – IP address or billing address. Yet, for some interesting reason, they choose to let you specify the address manually, and then take your word for it.

To me, this feels like a legal work-around they’ve had to take due to content restrictions and distributors insisting on various deals. Could it be that this shifts the legal responsibility to the customer rather than leave it with Amazon? Maybe I’m completely off-base here, but I think such weird complications are often lawyer-induced.

Note that I still don’t have the device itself, so I can’t fully guarantee that this works, and for all I know, they might plug this hole tomorrow. What I can tell you is that right now it does change the pricing and availability of many Kindle items.

5 great content discovery sites which aren’t Digg

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Despite what you may have heard in the last two weeks, Digg is not dead. It is, however, a very different service than when it started. What used to be a great place to find interesting links and hilarious commentary has become, for almost all intents and purposes, a Twitter clone.

Digg isn’t about to shut its doors, but I do get the feeling that regular, loyal Diggers are looking to take their custom elsewhere. Judging by the ‘Reddit incident‘ on Monday, where Digg users revolted in favor of Reddit, it looks like a mass exodus might already have begun.

So, if you’re a disenfranchised Digger, or if you’re just looking for the best of the rest when it comes to social news aggregators and content discovery, take a look at this list of alternatives!

StumbleUpon

In my opinion, StumbleUpon is actually the most similar service to Digg — at least if you’re an end-user, rather than a ‘Power Digger’. StumbleUpon is, without a doubt, the best way to discover the Web’s hidden gems. In any given ‘stumbling’ session you can (and will) discover innumerable sites and pictures that make you go ‘ooooh’.

The other great thing about StumbleUpon is that it learns from your browsing habits. By simply filling in your interests, and by processing which sites you thumbs-up or thumbs-down, SU tailors what kind of sites you’ll be shown while stumbling.

There’s also commenting, though they take the form of ‘reviews’, and there’s no meta moderation — just a raw stream of how much users love or hate a given website.

I’ve heard tales of people losing whole days to stumbling sessions. It’s a little too easy to pop open a new tab and hit the ‘stumble’ button on the toolbar.

Reddit

Ah, Reddit. It’s almost like a rags-to-riches story, with Reddit playing the role of Cinderella and Digg the ugly step-sister. Both services launched around 2005, but Digg has always received all of the riches and glory. Digg’s new overhaul could mark the end of its supremacy, but I don’t think Reddit is the natural ‘next stop’ for Diggers.

Reddit is completely different from Digg, but in a good way. You will still find a lot of fun and cool links on its home page, but it’s actually more of a forum than anything else. You can post pictures, links or simply begin a discussion thread. Just like Digg, meta moderation is a key aspect of Reddit posts and comments, so funny and insightful commentary always bubbles to the top.

What sets Reddit apart is its huge list of boards (or categories). Check the right-hand list — and also note how you can tailor your front page to show only the categories you’re interested in. I love how each category, no matter how esoteric, has an even mix of text-only discussion and fantastic website links. It’s a bit like a meta moderated 4chan

As a crowning cherry, Reddit is also incredibly lightweight in terms of layout and interface. Page load times are, as a result, very fast.

Slashdot

Many, many years ago I used to read Slashdot. I actually stopped because I couldn’t keep up with the sheer volume of news, and the huge thread of comments that each item generated.

Slashdot is, in many ways, the father of all modern news aggregators, and is actually a blog. News is submitted by users, and then Slashdot’s authors pick and choose which items make it onto the site itself, sometimes adding their own commentary. The comments are where things really kick off, though, with some stories seeing more than 10,000 comments — and of course, there is meta moderation, so you can choose what kind of comments you want to see; funny, insightful, informative or interesting.

If you like a more ‘curated’ news source, Slashdot is definitely the one for you. It’s often not as ‘bleeding edge’ as Digg or Reddit, but in many cases, who cares if you hear about a technology breakthrough a day or two later?

Twitter

Don’t hurt me! Yes, really, Twitter is a fantastic alternative to Digg.

I think we can all agree that Twitter is by far the best option when it comes to timeliness, but how do you sort the cream from the cruft? Twitter lacks meta moderation, so your best bet is follow twitterers that have already done the filtering for you.

It’s pretty damn hard to sort tweeters by quality, but with directories like WeFollow and the lists at Listorious you can hit the ground running. It will be a bit hit and miss, but having the ability to curate your own news stream made from excellent, insightful and timely tweets is unbeatable. Be brutal with your unfollowing — and follow lots of new people too! — and you should have a veritable Ganges of cool content to sift through.

And of course, with millions of potential commenters, Twitter can be a goldmine for contemporary commentary too.

Yahoo! Buzz

To finish, I’m including a service that is, basically, old Digg. Yahoo Buzz, launched in 2008 (well before Google Buzz!), is almost completely derived from Digg. From what I can tell, the only real difference is slight editorial control over what appears on the front page.

As you’d suspect from Yahoo, Buzz is slightly more mature than both Digg and Reddit. A lot of the story submitters are just random Yahoo users (and thus, many of the popular stories are written by Yahoo!), but there’s plenty of content from across the World Wide Web. You won’t find any funny cat pictures or infographics, however!

Yahoo Buzz also has an editor-maintained site called The Buzz Log, which provides a great overview of the world’s most important and interesting news.

Finally, there are localized versions of Buzz, with the top stories from UK & Ireland, Brazil, Mexico and so on.

Renewed hope for Steam on Linux: Valve job boards looking for engineer to port Windows games

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

If we’re to believe this new job posting over at Valve, reports of Steam for Linux’s death may have been greatly exaggerated. As you can see, Valve is on the hunt for a senior engineer who can port Windows games to Linux.

If you recall VP Doug Lombardi’s actual words, he never said Steam for Linux was dead — only that they weren’t currently working on it. Maybe that’s because they just hadn’t found the right man or woman for the job yet. As Sebastian pointed out to me, this doesn’t necessarily mean “Steam for desktop Linux” — it could just as easily have to do with embedded gaming.

Whatever the case may be, the news is certainly a bit more encouraging than Lombardi’s interview.

[via Tech Drive-In]

update: as Kaushik points out (as do a few of our friends at Reddit) this one’s a tad on the old-and-moldy side. Linux gamers, return to your pining…

ColorPix is a fast, free Windows color picker

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Filed under:

I recently went on a search to find a good color picker for Windows that was both portable and fast so that I could stop making the trip to Photoshop whenever I needed to find a color value.

After trying a number of different applications, I was delighted to find ColorPix (an app from ColorSchemer, who is the developer behind the previously mentioned ColorSchemer Studio 2).

ColorPix has an interesting lock and unlock mechanic for selecting the color that you want to find. While the application is active, hitting any key will unlock the picker, which you can then move anywhere on your screen. Once you’ve found the color, hitting any key again will lock it in so that you don’t accidentally nudge the mouse while clicking to make your selection. It also includes a magnifier window to help with pixel precession at several different levels of zoom.

Once you’ve locked in a color, you can click anywhere on the RGB, HEX, HSB, or CMYK values and copy the individual color for the mode that you’re working in directly to the clipboard. If you want the HEX value, you can use the Ctrl+C shortcut to get it even faster.

My typical workflow consists of hitting Alt+Tab (to make ColorPix active), hitting Space to unlock the picker, finding the color I want, hitting Space again to lock it in, using the Ctrl+C shortcut to copy the HEX value, and then pressing Alt+Tab again to go back to the application that I’m working in. The grand total of time that I’m using is usually less then 15 seconds.

The only two features that I’d love to see added would be support for the HSL color mode and an option to change the RGB scale from 0-255 to 0-1.

ColorPix weighs in at about 600 KB and doesn’t require an installation; that makes it perfect for storing on Dropbox so that it is readily available whenever I need it.

Apps like ColorPix make my workflow a little faster and my life a little easier. It’s become one of my favorite productivity boosters that I use any time I’m doing design work. If you do a lot with color, it’s definitely worth a download.

ComicRack, eComic reader and library management

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

First, let me disclaim that I do not read comics, nor manga, and I’m not a huge fan of anime. In fact, the only drawn-art medium that I really like is hentai. But enough about me! Today I’ve had the pleasure of using ComicRack, an eComics reader and manager.

I don’t have anything to compare it to, but according to my friends it’s the best comic reader out there. I can’t really tell you if it’ll make your comics more exciting or enjoyable, but I can tell you that it’s a joy to use. Just drag an archive of images into ComicRack, and off you go! It supports every popular archive format — ZIP (CBZ), RAR (CBR), TAR (CBT), 7Z (CB7) — and even PDFs, with a little hackery. If you prefer a more organized approach (and I’m pretty sure most comic collectors like to keep things organized), you can create a folder for each genre, or each series, or whatever tentacles tickles your fancy!

Once you’ve imported a few archives, it’s time to read some comics. ComicRack’s reader is truly lovely. You can view comics inside the main ‘library’ view, but really you want to use the full-screen viewer. Then it’s just a matter of sitting back, scrolling your mouse wheel, and reading. There’s a particularly nice page transition, too.

Best of all, ComicRack is free to download, has an active forum community — and there are even add-ons!

Digg exposes its monthly website traffic — turns out Reddit might be bigger

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

In a truly epic Reddit thread, kicked off by an infographic from its lead programmer Chris Slowe, it has emerged that Reddit actually serves more page views than Digg. Reddit, with over 300 million page views in August, would seem to dwarf Digg’s ‘200+ million‘.

Page views aren’t everything, though. Reddit’s ‘forum’ style (and lighter format) is conducive to fast, frantic communication — not to mention, Reddit users are actually having a conversation. I’m sure Reddit users hammer F5 more than their Digg brethren, too. Still, all talk of Reddit being the stumpy runt of social news aggregation should probably cease.

In terms of unique visitors, I’m fairly sure Reddit is still some way behind Digg, but at the same time there’s evidence to suggest that independent analysis of Digg’s traffic isn’t accurate. One thing’s for sure, though: if the titanic feces-flinging storm that surrounds Digg V4 continues, Digg won’t stay on top for long.

Google Chrome 6 goes stable, 2nd birthday celebration brings extension and autofill sync

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

It’s Chrome’s second birthday today, and in addition to posting some fancy-schmancy images to celebrate Google Chrome’s stable channel has been bumped to version 6. For those of you still keeping tabs on version changes, it’s only been four months since Chrome 5 went stable.

The update means that all Chrome users can now take advantage of extension and autofill sync — both important parts of Google’s desire to keep your ‘browsing platform’ uniform across all the computers you use.

Version 6 also brings the new consolidated menu, richer content settings (JavaScript, plug-ins, notifications, and the like), and the first-run search engine selection screen. There’s also a faster V8 JavaScript engine under the hood.

No announcement yet from the Chrome Blog, but we’ll add a link once their official post has gone live. In the meantime, the Chromium blog has a breakdown of some of the more important security updates and feature additions.

Google’s "Things to do" helps you show the power of Google to non-techies

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

thingstodo

For most people, “Google” has become synonymous with “search”. Heck, Cambridge dictionary lists it as a verb.

But as we all know, Google can do lots more than just search. You’ve got Gmail, and YouTube, and Maps, and the calculator, and a whole bunch of other Web properties.

While Gmail is enormously popular, not all Google projects fare so well (cough Wave cough). Even most of the search operators for Google itself are confined to the geekier crowd.

One thing Google UK has done to make its service more accessible to the non-geeky crowd is create Things to do. There’s no US version at Google.com, but the British one is lots of fun, especially for guys who don’t know Google so well.

It’s basically a long list of things a normal person might want to do online (no, porn is not represented … but that doesn’t mean you’re not normal, don’t worry). The lines are couched in informal British English, which makes it all the more amusing. Being a nerd, I knew I could personalize my YouTube channel, but I didn’t know I could “glam it up”.

The whole page is a JavaScript accordion: Each tip has a + sign next to it. Clicking the line (or the sign) opens up the line, and you get a short YouTube clip demonstrating the feature, or a Search box for the specific service (for example, Google Scholar).

Bottom line: This is a very nice resource for sending to clueless friends who are wondering what sort of things they could use Google for. Saves lots of explaining – and hey, you might even find something that’s new for you!

August browser stats show Android, Chrome on the rise

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Filed under:

It’s the beginning of the month again, and that means it’s time for the big analytics guns to release their browsing snapshots once again. While there’s not a lot of movement to report on for August of 2010, Google is no doubt pleased with the way things played out.

Android made a fairly major jump last month, climbing more than a full point — from 7.91 to 9.22%. That gain came mostly at the expense of iOS and Symbian, both of which slid about half a point. Blackberry OS also continued to rise, finishing August up .5%.

On the desktop, Google surged ahead almost a full point to finish at 10.76%. That’s nearly three times Chrome’s user base from this time last year, and it’s the first time Chrome has crossed the 10% mark.

And yes, Internet Explorer slipped yet again. IE is still dominant, yet it’s also now dangerously close to slipping below 50% share for the first time ever. Perhaps the IE9 beta will help stem the tide — it’s due to arrive in less than two weeks.

iTunes 10 now available to download

Just a quick note to say that the wait is over: iTunes 10 is now available to download. If the iTunes page shows the old logo, hit Ctrl+F5 to refresh the page.

For more details, check Jay’s post — or indeed, just peruse the Apple site!

There seems to be a lot of fallout over the 99-cent TV episodes, and the complete lack of Facebook integration in iTunes Ping — we’ll try to cover it in more detail later today.

Ask Engadget: best screwdriver kit for DIY computer work?

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Calvin, who needs a replacement for his recently broken Switztool 6-piece screwdriver kit. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’ve always used a Switztool 6-piece screwdriver for my computer work. I love how it retracts all the bits into the screwdriver. But it just bit the dust after a very heavy fall. Just want to know from other fellow readers: what’s the best screwdriver (or kit) out there for DIY computer work and electronics hacking?”

Quite an interesting question, indeed. We’d probably recommend a kit with a 00-sized Philips screwdriver for getting those laptop bolts out from the casing, but desktop-specific ones are certainly allowed. And… go!

Toshiba StorE TV+ drive connects up to 2TB of media directly to your HDTV

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Feel like connecting a HTPC or even one of the many streamers to your HDTV is overkill? Toshiba’s new StorE TV+ is prepared to quietly retain up to 2TB of media (in various formats, check after the break for specs) until called upon, when it can play them back via HDMI, no connected PC required. It can also connect to PCs or other DLNA devices (like, coincidentally enough, Toshiba’s new HDTVs) networked via Ethernet and the included WiFi dongle or load files directly from memory cards and USB drives. Even with all that, a lack of access to internet video sources makes the £199 MSRP a tough sell even ith 2TB of space at the ready, but if it works its way into a TV bundle then there may be buyers willing to bite when it ships next month, while an eSATA hard drive only StorE.D10 model will follow later this year for an unknown price.

Toshiba Places to deliver web content across all Toshiba screens

กันยายน 3rd, 2010
Toshiba Folio

Great devices aren’t great without content and if you want it done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself. For Toshiba that means a new online content and services portal called Toshiba Places. The point of this companion software is to ensure that all said company’s screens have a similar look and feel which will bring a consistent experience to every size screen while still being optimized for a TV or mobile phone (for example). Places will help you gain access to your own content or share it in your social networks as well as offer access to applications and various other online content. Exactly what premium content is available wil vary region by region and so until the US announcement comes we’ll have to wait to learn which of our favorite sources will be included.

Toshiba outs Lumileo pico projectors, only one of which requires a plug

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Toshiba’s new LED-based pico projectors won’t shake the world with VGA resolutions, 14 lumens and just 80 minutes of battery life, but we have to admit the Lumileo P100 and Lumileo M200′s focusing dial and keypad do look a spot more stylish than some of the cubes and rectangles we’ve tried. And while we’ve just pretty much described the P100 model in full, the M200 has an additional feature that might be worth your while — like the 3M MPro, it plays back video (including DivX), Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF files directly from 2GB of internal memory or your microSD card of choice, with no attached PC required. Otherwise, both project up to 60-inch pictures from VGA or “TV in” ports not shown here, and both will appear in Europe to claim an unspecified amount of that continent’s discretionary cash during the fourth quarter of this year. PR after the break.

iFixit continues its retro gaming rampage, reduces an innocent Atari 2600 to bare components

iFixit, is no device safe from the scars of your screwdriver? These eyes have been scarred, forced to witness the destruction of yet another childhood icon. Previously it was the RCA Studio II and the Magnavox Odyssey 100 before that. Now it’s the rather more memorable Atari 2600 going under the scalpel, four simple screws removed to reveal an eight-bit, 1.19MHz processor featuring 128 bytes of RAM (yes, a massive 1,024 bits) and a graphics adapter capable of 192 x 160 resolution with 128 colors — though only four could be used on any given line. Through these humble beginnings the cartridge-based console was born… and now here it rests.

Samsung Galaxy Tab reported to retail at €699 and €799 in Europe (update: O2 Germany pricing)

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

An increasing number of Euroland news outlets are reporting an eye-watering set of prices for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Although still unofficial and therefore not yet to be trusted, the values we’re hearing are €699 ($890) in France and €799 ($1,020) in Germany. Those presumably represent the cost of the 16GB and 32GB Tab, respectively, and align perfectly with Apple’s iPad WiFi + 3G pricing — aside from the fact the iPads have double the storage at each price point. Oops! That does make us wary to believe these numbers just yet, but if you want a laugh, why not check out UK importer Expansys today, which is offering a cracking deal for the 16GB Galaxy Tab at £680 ($1,050). And with only a 39-day wait!

[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

Update: So we’re hearing some conflicting information here. Samsung itself is telling us at IFA that no pricing has been announced and that any prices floating around are speculation — but it seems the company has already announced a suggested retail prices of SEK 9,000 in Sweden including VAT, which works out to about $1,240 (or $930 without VAT). In other words, even after taxes have been removed from the equation, you’re looking at a pretty pricey option for an unsubsidized device here. Let’s hope we see some steep discounts on contract, eh? Thanks, Rasmus!

Update 2: O2 Germany’s official Twitter account informs us that the Galaxy Tab will cost the Bundesrepublik roughly €759 (about $972) in all — a €99 ($127) deposit to start off and then €27.50 ($35) a month likely over two years.

Toshiba finally dives into Blu-ray 3D with BDX3100 player, offers up BDX1100 if stereo’s not your style

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Seems like Toshiba bit off more Blu-ray 3D than it could chew this year — the Japanese firm’s just announced that the new BDX3100KB will be its first set-top stereoscopic player, never mind the BDX3000 it announced at CES. Still, we’re willing to forgive and forget if the new machine (replete with DivX and MKV playback, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround, and instant playback of AVCHD footage from connected camcorders) makes it stateside sometime soon — both it and the relatively boring BDX1100 standard Blu-ray unit are presently slated for a UK release (at unspecified prices) in October of this year. PR after the break.

Toshiba Camileo S30 and P20 pocket camcorders get touchscreens

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Toshiba’s launching some new Camileo pocket HD camcorders at IFA, and hey — just like everything else in the world, they’ve sprouted three-inch touchscreens. Both offer 1080p recording and 10x digital zooms with HDMI out and support for 64GB SD storage; the £139 ($214) S30 comes in a more standard form factor that’s 19mm (.7 inch) thick and features eight megapixel still photos, automatic exposure control and image stabilization, while the £119 ($183) P20 comes in a pistol grip package and takes five megapixel stills. The P20 will hit in October, while the S30 is set to arrive in January, so it makes perfect sense for Toshiba to announce it now, in September. PR after the break.

Toshiba goes all LED with new HDTVs at IFA 2010

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Besides that Android tablet, Toshiba’s brought a whole slew LED-lit LCD televisions to IFA 2010. The REGZA WL Series is the company’s first range of 3DTVs, available in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes (pictured above) with LED backlighting, 7,000,000:1 contrast ratios, it 3D Resolution+ upscaling tech and one pair of active shutter glasses bundled with each one. They’re also DLNA enabled and ready for Windows 7, with the Toshiba Media Controller software making streaming content as easy as dragging and dropping a file. The rest of the lineup includes the high end VL series with LED backlighting, midrange REGZA 42SL738 42-inch HDTV and edge-lit SL738 series LCDs in smaller sizes from 9- to 32-inches. Check the press site or YouTube trailers embedded after the break for more details, and don’t be surprised to see the 200Hz motion technology, millimeter measurements, DVB-T tuners and BBC streaming while these are due in October across the pond, we’ll be keeping an eye out at CEDIA for US-bound variants.

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV gets a stereoscopic software makeover, now plays nice with 2D content, Blu-ray 3D and external screens

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Nabbed one of Toshiba’s fully-loaded stereoscopic laptops, only to find a dearth of actual 3D? The company’s got a software update that might revitalize your machine. Where previously you’d have to install ready-made dual-ocular content directly to your hard drive, the manufacturer’s just promised a Toshiba Video Player application that will convert your existing 2D content into 3D, plus firmware that will help you pipe stereoscopic video over the integrated HDMI port and upgrade your Blu-ray drive to take the new Blu-ray 3D discs — though we honestly thought it could do that last bit already. While there’s no word on availability, the press release suggests a download will pop up any moment… so, you know, be sure to keep both eyes out. PR after the break.

Roku XD and Netgear Roku XD Player hit the FCC

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Well, well, what’s this? Looks like Roku has some bigger plans for hitting back at the $99 Apple TV than just price cuts of its own: a Roku XD and a Netgear Roku XD Player just hit the FCC. That’s right, Netgear — Roku’s expanding its platform to third parties. We don’t know if these two devices are standalones or designed to work together, but we’re guessing they’re standalones; the Netgear unit might blend in some of the Digital Entertainer line’s support for local playback and services like PlayOn, YouTube, and CinemaNow. Of course, the big question is going to be price, since if these are substantially more than the Apple TV’s $99 they’re going to have to offer some major features, but we should be finding out what’s up soon enough: the confidentiality on these docs lifts October 23.

Samsung Wave 723 flaunts Bada, little else at IFA

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Samsung just grew its Bada line with a low-end foil to the original Wave, the so-called Wave 723 — and we just happened to catch it hanging out tucked away in a distributor’s booth at IFA this week. Though the leather-grain flip cover is a classy touch, make no mistake that this one is destined for the bottom bits of the full-touch featurephone market segment thanks to a middle-of-the-road TFT LCD that looks pretty washed out and low-res compared to the Wave’s Super AMOLED (interestingly, the 723 is the first Bada phone to use version 1.1 of the platform, whose major addition is support for auto-scaling between multiple resolutions). We were also surprised at how poorly responsive the screen was to touches and swipes; we even thought for a moment that it might be resistive, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Then again, 802.11n support ain’t bad, and Samsung certainly seems as committed to Bada as ever, so we imagine they’ll sell a few. Hit up the gallery!

Toshiba issues recall for 41,000 T Series laptops because of burn hazard

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Toshiba‘s announced a worldwide, voluntary recall of about 41,000 T Series laptops because of a burn hazard. The laptops apparently carry the risk of overheating AC adapters which can then… burn you. Toshiba has reported that its received 129 complaints, including two minor burns, about the laptops, which include the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite Pro T130, which were sold between August of 2009 through August of 2010. If you happened to buying one of these burn-prone babies, hit up the source to contact Toshiba for more information.

Shocker! Google’s Android logo boosted from Atari Lynx title ‘Gauntlet: The Third Encounter’

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Back in the early 90′s whilst playing our Atari Lynx — friendless and alone, of course — we couldn’t have imagined that a second-rate spinoff of the popular Gauntlet franchise would unlock the secrets behind the birth of Google’s Android OS. But, lo and behold, what has one of our faithful tipsters found down here, amongst the ruins of Gauntlet: The Third Encounter? That’s right, nearly irrefutable proof that the Android team (or at least its graphic designers) have plumbed the depths of Epyx’s not-quite-masterpiece for the iconic droid logo we’ve come to know and love. Sure, the top-down scroller provided all kinds of new character classes like the “Nerd,” “Punkrocker,” and “Pirate,” but only one of these fresh faces would provide the blueprint for Android’s public face. It’s hard to argue that there isn’t some level of appropriation here, given the multiple similarities between the two pieces of art, right down to the antennae, dotted eyes, general size and shape, and even the strip which cuts across the midsection of the bot. Oh yeah, and the character is named Android. We personally would like to hear what Google has to say for themselves in regards to this blatant theft of intellectual property, and as for the Epyx artists who slaved over a hot Amiga to bring this image to life — the taste of sweet justice is yours.

[Thanks, Davey]

Antec wants to rockus with its new soundscience 2.1 ’3D’ speakers

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Yesterday it was Corsair, today it’s the turn of Antec to step into the world of PC audio components. Best known for building cases and power supplies, the company’s aiming to make a splash in this unexplored pool with its all-new soundscience brand and first product, the rockus 3D|2.1 speakers. We’re guessing capital letters weren’t high on the priority list here, with Antec instead opting to focus on delivering “immersive 3D soundscapes,” the supposed aural equivalent of three-dimensional visuals. Beyond the marketing exaggerations, you’ll find anodized aluminum satellite speakers, both digital and analog input options, and that cute little control pod for adjusting volume and toggling between stereo and Antec’s proprietary 3Dsst mode. This rockus 2.1 set certainly looks stylish enough, but the asking price of $250 makes us think we’ll probably have to make do without one this fall.

Acer LumiRead makes pit stop at IFA prior to launch

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

We caught the LumiRead set up and ready for some serious page-turning action as Acer set up its booth at IFA today (yes, it’s true, the show still hasn’t technically started), which marks the first time we’ve actually been able to hold the upcoming e-reader — previously, the closest we’d gotten was the impersonal touch of a glass enclosure back at Computex. The verdict? After having touched one of those newfangled Kindles, we’ve got to say that pretty much every other e-reader out there feels like a ridiculously overweight beast, and the LumiRead gets swept up into that classification. The barcode scanner is still there (you can see it in our gallery below) and it’s still as awesome of a concept as ever, but Acer has replaced the smooth plastic back with a ridged, patterned one on this newer prototype — and considering that the launch is scheduled for October, we imagine this is nearly final or final spec. The thumbstick feels decent, but we don’t really think it’s the best way to navigate… which is a lesson Amazon already learned with the last version of the Kindle, by the bye. So here’s your recipe for success, Acer: soft-touch back, cut the thickness by a third, eliminate the wasted space above the keyboard, and keep the barcode reader. Boom.

MSI WindBox III gets a bit more oomph, still lives on your LCD

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

If your current WindBox is growing a bit long in the tooth, MSI has a newcomer with somewhat more respectable internals. Since it’s a fanless machine designed to live on the rear of your LCD, you won’t be ordering one with a Core i7, but the included Core 2 Duo chip is certainly a step above what’s been offered in the past. It’s designed primarily to be used as an ultra-low power solution for folks needing to handle the simplest of simple tasks, though the integrated graphics are purportedly capable of HD playback (on a good day). It’s packing DVI, VGA and HDMI outputs, six USB 2.0 sockets, a pair of mini-PCIe slots, inbuilt 802.11b/g/n WiFi and a Bluetooth module, but your guess is as good as ours when it comes to price or availability.

All Things D: Facebook blocked Apple’s Ping service for unauthorized use

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

We’d already heard whispers that Apple had to yank Facebook Connect integration from its new Ping music network because the connection was being denied by Facebook, and now Kara Swisher at All Things D is confirming it — and she’s saying Facebook shut down access on purpose after Apple used the find-your-friends API without permission. Juicy! Here’s the deal: Facebook’s friend-finding API is generally open access, but anyone that wants to hit it an extreme number of times has to sign a deal agreeing to protect Facebook user data and limit network impact. Given the sheer size of the iTunes customer base, it’s no surprise that Facebook wanted such a deal, but apparently negotiations broke down — possibly over what Steve Jobs referred to as “onerous terms” — and Apple decided to just go ahead and use the API anyway. (Which, truth be told, is pretty in character for Apple.) Facebook then blocked access, Apple had to scramble to clean up all the Facebook references, and here we are. Only possibly not for long: Swisher also says Apple and Facebook are still negotiating, and Facebook Connect might eventually reappear in Ping. There is no word when Ping might actually be useful or interesting, however.

Canon’s Wonder Camera, and other future concepts that tease us from behind glass

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Canon had a lot to show for itself at its annual expo today, from the EOS 60D to the (working!) Multipurpose 4K concept, but the best goodies are of course the ones just a few steps outside of today’s technological limits. One display in particular that caught our eye was the 2010 Image Creation set, featuring the bold Wonder Camera Concept from July. Nothing functional here, not even in sleight-of-hand video render form, but the models are quite the lookers. Joining the “SLR Style Concept” (as it was being called here, according to the accompanying placard) were the 3D Cam, Image Palette (display), Image Navi Cam (point and shoot), and MR HMD (helmet) — all aesthetically Kubrick in nature. Not that we mind, of course; we find it best to go ahead and accept our future for the glossy white design motif that it’ll assuredly become. Elsewhere, we happened upon the purported “world’s largest CMOS sensor” — not that we’d argue with what we saw — and the more compact 120 megapixel CMOS, along with (separately) its panoramic camera prototype body. You can live vicariously through us in the photos below.

WSJ: iPhone 4 to be offered by Vodafone and O2 in Germany as T-Mobile loses exclusivity

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

The last bastion of Applephone exclusivity in Europe is about to be toppled, according to the Wall Street Journal, as Deutsche Telekom is said to be preparing for the loss of its iPhone 4 monopoly ahead of this year’s holiday shopping season. Citing separate sources familiar with the matter, this report suggests that Vodafone and O2′s German arms are earnestly reaching out for Apple’s latest and greatest, and while distribution deals haven’t yet been finalized, negotiations have reached an “advanced stage.” Much as with O2′s UK exclusivity deal, Apple looks to have opted against extending its arrangement with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in an effort to reach the widest possible consumer base. Makes a lot of sense to us, now how about doing the same back home?

Canon’s 4k Multipurpose Camera concept weakens knees, shoots video. We go hands-on! (Video)

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

You’re looking at Canon’s new 4k “Multipurpose” concept, a wondrous amalgamation of still and video cameras pumping 60 frames per second at 4k resolution out of an 8 megapixel 2/3-inch CMOS sensor. Yep, we said 4k video, approximately quadruple the resolution of 1080p. We had a chance to go hands-on with the prototype at Canon Expo 2010, and believe us when we tell you that it’s really, really sharp, both in terms of hardware and the images it produces. The hardware is essentially a giant SLR body packing a fixed video-style lens complete with zoom and focus controls and a high-def flip-out LCD viewfinder (we’re told it’s the same LCD found in Canon’s new XF-300 and XF-305 video cameras).

We were told by a Canon rep that, unlike competing camera-maker RED’s offerings, the Multipurpose concept is not specifically designed for digital cinema. Instead, it’s intended to offer “multipurpose image capture,” which seems to imply something like the continuous photography promised by Canon’s other futuristic prototype. And although we’re told that the 4k Multipurpose camera will never come to market, it certainly sends a bold message to an industry content with 1080p that higher resolutions like 4k are coming down the pipe and aren’t just the realm of boundary-pushing cinema nerds. But don’t take our word for it, check out our hands-on video with this beast after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Tab preview

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

After a week of painful teasing, Samsung has come clean about its Galaxy Tab 7-inch Android tablet. We got the nitty gritty specs, along with some quality time with the device, and we like what we’re seeing on both fronts. Follow along after the break as we break it all down, including some hot hot video of the thing in action!

Samsung: ‘we are prioritizing our Android platform’

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Samsung may be one of the big players that Microsoft is pinning its hopes on for Windows Phone 7, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to the company at IFA. Speaking to Reuters at the show, Samsung’s head of marketing for its mobile division, YH Lee, said flatly that “we are prioritizing our Android platform,” adding that, “Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it.” Lee further went on to note that the company will continue to focus on its own Bada platform (at least outside of North America), but seemingly downplayed Windows Phone 7 when asked about it, saying only that “there is still some professional, specialized demand there.” Ouch. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Samsung also says it’s “not seeing visible demand for Symbian.”

Canon EOS 60D hands-on (video)

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

The 2010 Canon Expo is filled to the brim with drool-worthy image-capturing hardware (more on that later in the day), but the first thing we did when arriving was run straight to the EOS 60D. While we can’t really get into the gritty details in terms of image and video quality based on show floor impressions alone, we will say the comfort and ease of use are superb — not to mention an articulating display that’ll come in handy for crazier shot composition. The company’s definitely got a knack for iterative upgrades, but a prosumer-focused model like this is just a knockout for the price, and leaves us wondering what the future holds for the Rebel T2i when only $200 separates the two cameras. Pictures below, and check out a video walkthrough done by our Engadget Show Producer / Canon enthusiast Chad Mumm after the break.

iFixit tears apart the Nintendo Famicon

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Do you remember the Nintendo Family Computer, or Famicon? Well, you might not — it came to earth in 1983 and was Japan’s version of the NES. Now, continuing its week of vintage teardowns, iFixit’s gotten its hands on one of these colorful gems and done what it does. The Famicon is pretty easily dismantled, and simple inside, as well. As you can see, there’s almost nothing going on in there! There’s one more photo below, but hit up the source link for the full set.

Verizon officially announces prepaid smartphone data packages

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

After a flood of leaks, Verizon’s just officially announced its prepaid data plan for smartphones. The new 3G Prepaid data package will offer smartphone users “unlimited” data for $30 a month, while feature phone users can score 25MB of data a month for $10 with a 20-cent-per-meg overage fee — all contract-free, of course. The prepaid smartphones include all of Verizon’s Android phones, the Pre and Pixi Plus, as well as most recent BlackBerrys, which is a pretty solid list of choices — and you can sign up for them today or online on September 28. Of course, you’re still on the hook for a full price phone and a voice plan (and there’s no mention of texting), so whether or not this works out to be a deal is up to you, but we’re definitely seeing the prepaid data market start to significantly heat up, and we like it. PR with full device list after the break.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab: more relief on the go

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

The Samsung Galaxy Tab certainly looks like it’s going to be a pretty sweet little tablet, but man — Samsung really needs to hire some better Korean-to-English translators. Hot on the heels of the charmingly obtuse T-Mobile Vibrant (“A Twitter approaches to synchronising data to allow access to your status”), Sammy’s new Galaxy Tab promo site is a virtual treasure trove of almost-but-not-quite English, starting with a launch animation that offers you “More relief on the go” straight through to a video call demo that suggests you and a co-worker share a “cosy time.” Uh, no thanks. Greatest hits in the gallery below.

Skype updates Android app for Verizon users, lets you keep the WiFi on

กันยายน 3rd, 2010
Well, it looks like you still won’t be able to actually make calls over WiFi, but Verizon Android users can now at least keep their WiFi connection active while using Skype Mobile — something that was curiously not possible before. That’s just one of the improvements in the latest version of the app (also updated for BlackBerry), which also includes features like incoming caller ID, support for copy and paste and emoticons in IM conversations, and the ability to automatically set your location as your mood message.

Mophie Juice Pack Air: coming to double your iPhone 4 battery next week

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

So, you’ve been waiting for a Mophie Juice Pack for your iPhone 4? You’re not alone. Well, we have word that it’ll be available as soon as next week for $79. We even managed to get hands on with a prototype that looked and felt pretty tight considering the fact that it doubles the iPhone’s non-removable battery. The Juice Pack Air features pass-through USB charging and sync with iTunes, an integrated 4 LED charge status, and a standby switch the shuts off the juice turning the appendage into a rather attractive (albeit, heavy with a 1500mAh capacity battery), soft-grip case. Now you know.

Toshiba Folio 100 preview

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

We just got to handle the Folio 100, after witnessing it bolted to a wall earlier, and we have to admit that it’s lighter and thinner than it looks at first glance. Unfortunately, it still feels pretty cheap, and we’re not sure how much we trust ourselves one-handing something this large and fragile seeming. Our brief glimpse of Toshiba’s custom skin on here was most depressing — it’s not final, but we’re not sure why Toshiba is even bothering showing anything in this abysmal state. The bits we’ve seen of Toshiba’s market (for music, apps, e-books and so forth) look a bit better, but as far as we know there’s no official Android Market on this thing — a kiss of death for almost any Android device. Toshiba’s biggest failure here, however, is probably the LCD it sourced for this tablet — the screen looks as cheap and low res as could be, and while a €399 list price is decent for a tablet this size, it hardly seems a good excuse to stoop to KIRF-level components. Hit up the gallery for all the angles, along with some comparison shots with the mind share monopolizing iPad.

Update: We just heard from Toshiba’s US team and there are apparently no plans to bring the Folio 100 stateside. Given our lackluster first impressions, we can’t say we’re all that upset by that…

Why did Apple take Facebook Connect out of Ping?

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Apple certainly took its sweet time releasing iTunes 10 yesterday, and we’re beginning to think it’s because the company was making a last-second change to its new Ping social-network-for-music: the removal of Facebook Connect for finding friends. Seriously — although an option to find friends via Facebook was conspicuously present during Steve’s keynote demos, it’s not there anymore. Oddly, the option was there at the very beginning — several Engadget staffers definitely saw a Facebook button when they signed up for Ping last night, and there’s a whole thread on Apple’s support site of people who also saw it and are now wondering where it’s gone.

Just to make things even more confusing, Kara Swisher at All Things D got two very different statements from Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller at the event yesterday: Schiller was enthusiastic about finding friends via Facebook, while Jobs said Zuckerberg and co. were demanding “onerous terms” that Apple refused. We’re assuming Jobs was talking about something deeper than just finding friends via Connect, but it’s still all very strange — and as it stands, finding friends on Ping right now requires a fair bit of guesswork and searching, so we’re hoping this all gets sorted soon. Check the video of Phil Schiller talking about Facebook and Ping after the break, as well as a snap of it (sort of) working from last night.

Update: We can’t confirm this, but we’ve just gotten a tip saying the problem is primarily on Facebook’s end — the service is currently denying requests from Ping, and the resulting errors apparently caused enough other problems for Apple to pull the plug on the connection entirely until it’s fixed. That certainly would explain why Ping has seemed buggy and slow from the outset, but we’re still waiting for some official explanation of what’s going on.

Samsung exec says next tablet will use Android ‘Honeycomb,’ Galaxy Tab getting Gingerbread

กันยายน 3rd, 2010
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has only just finally, officially been revealed, but it looks like the company is already doing at least a bit of talking about its next tablet (and the future of the Galaxy Tab). According to Tech Radar, Samsung’s head of product planning, WP Hong, has said that “moving forward, with Honeycomb, that will be used in the next generation tablet, as it is specifically optimized for different type of tablet, and will be used on another product only.” Not only is that the most official word we’ve had so far of a Galaxy Tab followup (curiously described as a “different type of tablet”), but it’s also seemingly the first time that an ODM has publicly referred to a future Android version as “Honeycomb” — a name that Tech Radar had previously heard from “multiple sources.” It seems that Honeycomb won’t be making it to the current Galaxy Tab, however, but Hong did say that “depending on our international partners, we’ll be working to upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread.”

Harman AKG teams up with Quincy Jones on Signature Line of headphones

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

Gone is the day when headphones could be respectable without some kind of corporate tie-in or Lady Gaga endorsement. Alas, even Harman’s revered AKG division has roped in the venerable Quincy Jones for its new (wait for it) Quincy Jones Signature Line. We’re talking three models here, ready for launch in October and ranging from the Q 701 “reference class” over-the-ear cans (pictured), the Q 460 lightweight headphones, and Q 350 buds. The Q 701 features ergonomically-shaped cushions of velvet, an “unbeatable” linear frequency response covering 10Hz to 39.8kHz, a 45-mm high excursion driver, and detachable 99-percent oxygen-free cables. The portable $229.99 Q 460 on-ear headphones feature a 3D-axis folding system and an iPhone compatible in-line remote with microphone and play, pause, and skip functions. The in-ear Q 350 also bring iPhone compatible and target the “audiophile on the go” with $149.99 to burn. Seems fitting for a man with 79 Grammy nominations (and 27 awards) to benefit from his name. And you can feel better about him selling out knowing that an undisclosed sum from every pair of headphones sold goes towards the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium — a foundation dediqated to eduqating Ameriqan kids about musiq. Ironic, because the Grammys might actually be relevant if American music corporations knew anything about good music.

Toshiba Folio 100 goes official, lands in Q4

กันยายน 3rd, 2010

If Samsung’s Galaxy Tab reads like a how-to for making a decent Android tablet, Toshiba’s Folio 100 seems to serve an opposite purpose (starting with that unfortunate name), which is disappointing for a company like Toshiba. The tablet just got official here at IFA, after being spotted on the show floor earlier today, but there’s nothing in the press release to change our initial impressions of the device. There’s a 1024 x 600 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, Tegra 2 under the hood, 16GB of built-in storage, SD card expansion, HDMI out, 802.11n WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and Android 2.2 with Flash 10.1 running on top of it all. Toshiba claims 7 hours of battery of “regular” use (65% web browsing, 10% video playback, 25% standby), and everything is packed into a 0.55-inch thick form factor that weighs 1.7 pounds. Software-wise Toshiba has baked in Opera, Toshiba Media Player, FBReader, Fring (for video calls), Documents To Go, and Evernote, with Toshiba offering its own app marketplace and developer platform for tablet-specific apps. Unfortunately, the tablet ends up in person as less than the sum of its parts, and while Toshiba might be able to redeem itself slightly with perhaps a surprisingly low pricepoint, we don’t imagine ourselves yearning for this device to escape the bonds of its initial Europe, Middle East, and Africa launch markets. PR is after the break.

Update: Toshiba just said that the suggested retail price will be €399.

AMD makes Eyefinity easier with line of budget-minded active DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters

กันยายน 3rd, 2010
AMD makes Eyefinity easier with line of budget-minded active DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters

AMD’s Eyefinity technology is one of the best ways to fill every inch of your peripheral vision with pixels. However, it’s certainly not the cheapest, relying on DisplayPort-capable monitors — inputs that even some current models lack. This has left many gamers buying $100 DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters, significantly raising the cost of adoption, but AMD has announced an unusual plan to tackle that: cheap adapters. The company is helping to develop converters that are expected to retail for just $30, still not as disposable as the VGA-to-DVI blocks you have cluttering up your junk drawer, but considering these are active plugs it’s probably about as good as we’re going to get. So, who’s up for some six-monitor Starcraft II?
